Are baby slings safe? Many people have seen the recent news casts about the dangers of baby slings. So, can a baby sling or carrier be safe? YES! There are many safe ways to carry your baby and safe products to help you do so. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. You should always be aware of your baby and able to monitor him regardless of the type of carrier you choose to use. Think about this – is your baby close enough to kiss? If your baby is close enough to kiss, then he or she is up high, visible and easily monitored. Is the carrier promoting proper position of your baby’s hips and spine? Baby should be well supported so that his legs are up at a 90 degree angle or more, he has a wide base of support ideally from “knee pit” to “knee pit”, and his back is snugly supported so that even asleep he maintains his position. This seems obvious, but make sure baby can breathe. Your baby’s face should not be covered with fabric. Baby should never be in a chin to chest position. This position can constrict baby’s airway making it very difficult for baby to breathe.
So, what baby carrier is best? Which baby carrier is best for you and your baby is really a personal decision. I really like woven wraps because they are very versatile and secure. I can wrap my squirmy little guy in a high back carry and know he is safe, or nurse hands free, or hip carry or front carry all with one wrap. I really like my ring sling because it is quick and easy for short trips, looks nice enough for church and is easy to adjust while sitting down at a restaurant. When my babies are tiny, I love the snugly feel and easy in and out of a stretchy wrap. For my toddler, a soft structured carrier is nice for quick up and downs. I’m currently learning to like a Mei Tai. Any of these carriers can be used safely and which one is best is really up to you and what you want from your carrier. Feel free to contact me if you would like help deciding which one is right for you.
So what is the problem? There is a specific type of baby carrier that is very concerning. This type of carrier is known as a “bag sling”. It seems to be babywearing meets duffle bag. Even when used per manufacturer’s instructions, baby is placed in an unsafe position with chin to chest and elasticized fabric close to or covering baby’s face. Often this carrier hangs too low and if the person using this sling leans over baby can actually swing away from the person carrying them. More information on the dangers of this specific type of carrier can be found at this blog.
